Jayne Atkinson

Jayne Atkinson was born on February 18, 1959, in Bournemouth, Dorset, England. Her family relocated to the United States in 1968 when she was nine, and she subsequently grew up in North Miami Beach, Florida. She pursued higher education at Northwestern University, earning a BS in Communications in 1981, and later an MFA from the Yale Drama School in 1985. Her career began in regional theaters before she made her Off-Broadway debut in 1987 with the Manhattan Theatre Club’s production of ‘Bloody Poetry’. This was quickly followed by her Broadway debut in a revival of Arthur Miller’s ‘All My Sons’ in the same year. These early roles established her presence in the theater community.

Throughout her career, Atkinson has accumulated significant achievements in various mediums. She gained recognition for her roles as Annie Greenwood in the ‘Free Willy’ franchise (1993, 1995) and as Tabitha Walker in ‘The Village’ (2004). On television, she is known for portraying Karen Hayes in ’24’ (2006–2007) across 30 episodes, BAU Section Chief Erin Strauss in ‘Criminal Minds’ (2007–2020) over 24 episodes, and Secretary of State Catherine Durant in ‘House of Cards’ (2013–2018) for 38 episodes. More recently, she appeared as Ruth Martin in ‘Clarice’ (2021) for 9 episodes and Katherine Collier in ‘Death and Other Details’ (2024) across 10 episodes. Her stage work has also been critically acclaimed, earning her two Tony Award nominations.
