Jenna Welch Bush was born on November 25, 1981, in Dallas, Texas. As the daughter of former U.S. President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush, her early life was marked by public attention. She attended the University of Texas at Austin, graduating in 2004 with a degree in English. During her father’s 2004 presidential re-election campaign, she and her sister, Barbara, made several public appearances, including a notable speech at the Republican Convention in August 2004.
Following her graduation and prior to her widespread media career, Hager worked as a teacher’s aide at Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. She also interned with UNICEF’s Educational Policy Department in Latin America, focusing on educational initiatives in Panama. These experiences influenced her first book, “Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope,” published in 2007, which chronicled her work with UNICEF-sponsored charities. This marked her initial foray into authorship, with a portion of the proceeds supporting UNICEF initiatives and the education of the book’s subject. In 2008, she co-authored “Read All About It!” with her mother, aimed at promoting reading among children. Her career further diversified in 2012 when she was appointed editor-at-large for “Southern Living” magazine.
Hager joined NBC News in 2009 as a correspondent for “The Today Show.” Over the years, her role expanded to include contributing and anchoring, often filling in for other hosts during the show’s later hours. A significant career milestone came in 2019 when she began co-anchoring the fourth hour of “Today” alongside Hoda Kotb, following Kathie Lee Gifford’s departure. That same year, she launched “Read with Jenna,” a monthly book club on the “Today Show.” Her influence in media and literature continued to grow, leading to a first-look deal with Universal Studio Group in 2022 to develop various projects. In February 2023, she announced her third book, “Love Comes First,” further solidifying her presence as an author and media figure. She also hosts “Open Book with Jenna,” a podcast featuring interviews with authors, launched in September 2023.
