Jenna Dewan was born on December 3, 1980, in Hartford, Connecticut, to Nancy Bursch and Darryll Dewan. Her father has Syrian Lebanese and Polish heritage, while her mother’s background includes German, English, and Cornish ancestry. Growing up in Grapevine, Texas, Dewan developed a passion for dance at the age of five. She attended the University of Southern California and was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Her professional journey in entertainment began as a backup dancer, leading her to tour with prominent artists such as Janet Jackson and Ricky Martin. She also appeared in numerous music videos for artists including Justin Timberlake, Mandy Moore, and Missy Elliott, showcasing her early talent and dedication to dance.
Dewan made her acting debut in television sitcoms like “Quintuplets” in 2004, “The Young and the Restless” (2004) and “Joey” (2005) before securing her breakout role as Nora Clark in the 2006 film “Step Up,” where her dancing background was central to the character. This role significantly elevated her profile in the film industry. Her career continued with roles in films such as “Take the Lead” (2006) and “10 Years” (2011). On television, she has appeared in “The Playboy Club” (2011), “American Horror Story: Asylum” (2012), “Witches of East End” (2013-2014), and “Supergirl” (2015-2016). More recently, she has been a recurring and main cast member in “The Resident” (2018-2019) and “The Rookie” (2021-present) as Bailey Nune.
Beyond acting, Dewan has also ventured into production. She co-founded 33andOut Productions, which produced the documentary “Earth Made of Glass” (2010), earning a Peabody Award in 2012. She has also served as an executive producer for the television series “Step Up: High Water” (2018-2022) and the TV movies “Devil on My Doorstep” (2023) and “Let’s Get Physical” (2022), the latter of which she also starred in. Additionally, Dewan has hosted and judged various reality dance shows, including “World of Dance” (2017-2018) and “Come Dance with Me” (2022), leveraging her extensive dance expertise.
