About

Jerry O’Neil Lawler, born on November 29, 1949, in Memphis, Tennessee, embarked on his professional wrestling journey in 1970. His early career saw him quickly rise to prominence, securing his first championship in September 1971 by winning a battle royal. Lawler honed his skills in various territories, notably in Memphis, where he became a co-owner and top star of the Continental Wrestling Association (CWA). In 1974, he adopted the moniker “King of Wrestling” after defeating his former mentor, Jackie Fargo, for the NWA Southern Heavyweight Championship. His innovative approach to wrestling, combining showmanship with solid in-ring technique, set him apart.

Lawler’s career is marked by significant rivalries and milestones. A notable feud in 1982 with comedian Andy Kaufman brought mainstream attention to professional wrestling. Their staged altercations, including a famous incident on “Late Night with David Letterman,” blurred the lines between reality and entertainment long before it became common practice. In 1988, Lawler achieved a major career highlight by unifying the AWA World Heavyweight Championship and the WCWA World Heavyweight Championship at SuperClash III, establishing the USWA Unified World Heavyweight Championship, a title he would hold 28 times. He later joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in 1992 as a color commentator, a role where he famously partnered with Jim Ross, creating one of wrestling’s most iconic broadcast duos. Lawler’s commentary was characterized by its wit and distinct personality, complementing his in-ring achievements. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007, recognizing his extensive contributions to the sport.

Throughout his tenure with WWE, Lawler continued to wrestle periodically, engaging in memorable feuds with figures like Bret Hart, Doink the Clown, and Tazz. His passion for wrestling was evident even when a legitimate heart attack during a live Raw broadcast in 2012 briefly halted his commentary career; he made a remarkable recovery and returned to the announce table. Beyond wrestling, Lawler has pursued diverse interests, including acting in films like “Man on the Moon” (1999), running for Mayor of Memphis, and establishing wrestling-themed businesses. His career reflects a sustained presence in entertainment and sports, driven by a unique blend of athleticism, charisma, and storytelling acumen.
