Joseph William Calzaghe, born on March 23, 1972, in Hammersmith, London, developed an early interest in boxing, starting with a children’s boxing toy and later joining Newbridge Amateur Boxing Club at age ten. His early life involved moving between Sardinia and Wales, eventually settling in Pentwynmawr, Caerphilly, where he attended local schools. Despite facing bullying during his teenage years, which he stated impacted him, Calzaghe dedicated himself to boxing. His amateur career was highly successful, securing three consecutive senior British ABA titles in different weight categories between 1990 and 1993, accumulating a reported amateur record of 110 wins and 10 losses.
Calzaghe’s professional career began in September 1993, marked by a debut victory at Cardiff Arms Park. He quickly established himself, winning the vacant British super-middleweight title in October 1995 by stopping Stephen Wilson. In November 1996, he joined Frank Warren’s stable, a significant turning point leading to his WBO super-middleweight championship win against Chris Eubank in October 1997. This marked the beginning of his impressive 10-year reign in the division, which included 20 successful defenses.
His career progression saw him unify titles at super-middleweight, notably defeating Jeff Lacy in 2006 to claim the IBF and inaugural The Ring titles. He further solidified his status as an undisputed champion by defeating Mikkel Kessler in 2007, unifying the WBO, The Ring, WBA, and WBC super-middleweight titles. Moving to light-heavyweight, Calzaghe defeated Bernard Hopkins in April 2008 for The Ring Light Heavyweight Championship and later secured a victory against Roy Jones Jr. in November 2008. He retired in February 2009 with an undefeated professional record of 46 wins.
