About

Joe Flanigan, born Joseph Dunnigan III on January 5, 1967, in Los Angeles, California, embarked on a career that initially diverged from acting. His surname was changed to Flanigan after being adopted by his stepfather, John Flanigan. His early life included a move to a ranch near Reno, Nevada, at age six, and attending a boarding school in Ojai, California, from age 14, where he first engaged with acting in a school production of “A Streetcar Named Desire”. He later pursued a history degree at the University of Colorado, appearing in “Coriolanus”, and also spent a year studying at the Sorbonne in Paris, becoming fluent in French. His initial career interests led him to Capitol Hill, working on President George H. W. Bush’s advance team, and later to New York City publications such as “Town & Country” and “Interview” magazine, pursuing a writing career.

Flanigan transitioned to acting in 1994, moving to Los Angeles after studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse and being coached by Gerald Gordon. He secured guest roles in several television series, including “Profiler”, “First Monday”, and “Sisters”. His breakthrough came with the role of Major/Lt. Colonel John Sheppard in “Stargate Atlantis”, which aired from 2004 to 2009 for 100 episodes. During his time on the show, he resided in Vancouver, British Columbia, for filming and traveled to Los Angeles on weekends. He also contributed to the series as a writer, developing the stories for the second-season episode “Epiphany” (2005) and the fourth-season episode “Outcast” (2008).

Post-“Stargate Atlantis”, Flanigan continued his acting career with various roles. He joined the cast of Apple’s TV show “SEE” starring Jason Momoa, appearing in multiple episodes of its second and third seasons (2021-2022). He also took on a recurring role as Dr. Neil Byrne in “General Hospital” from 2019 to 2020. Other notable projects include the TV movie “Ferocious Planet” (2011) where he played Colonel Sam Synn, and the film “6 Bullets” (2012) as Andrew Fayden. Flanigan’s work extends to video game voice acting, such as Elliot Salem in “Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel” (2013), and appearances in series like “Fringe” (2011) and “Major Crimes” (2013).
