About

Joseph Elliott Girardi was born on October 14, 1964, in Peoria, Illinois. He attended Northwestern University, where he excelled academically, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering in 1986, and athletically, being a two-time All-Big Ten selection and a three-time Academic All-American. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the fifth round of the 1986 MLB draft, marking the beginning of a distinguished career in professional baseball.

Girardi’s playing career as a catcher spanned from 1989 to 2003, during which he played for the Chicago Cubs (1989-1992, 2000-2002), Colorado Rockies (1993-1995), New York Yankees (1996-1999), and St. Louis Cardinals (2003). A significant highlight of his playing days includes winning three World Series championships with the New York Yankees in 1996, 1998, and 1999. He was also an NL All-Star in 2000 while playing for the Chicago Cubs. His career statistics include 4127 at-bats, a .267 batting average, 36 home runs, and 422 runs batted in.

Transitioning into management, Girardi led the Florida Marlins in 2006, where he earned the National League Manager of the Year Award despite a low team payroll. He then managed the New York Yankees from 2008 to 2017, securing a World Series championship in 2009. His managerial tenure with the Yankees included leading the team to the postseason six times. After a period as a broadcaster, he returned to management with the Philadelphia Phillies from 2020 to 2022. Joe Girardi currently serves as a sports broadcaster, providing analysis for MLB Network, Marquee Sports Network, and YES Network.
