Joel Edgerton

Joel Edgerton was born on June 23, 1974, in Blacktown, New South Wales, Australia. He is the son of Michael, a solicitor and property developer, and Marianne (née van Dort) Edgerton. His mother is a Dutch immigrant from The Hague. Edgerton attended The Hills Grammar School, graduating in 1991, and later studied at Nepean Drama School in 1994. His early career involved various stage productions, including playing King Henry in “Henry V” and Prince Hal in “Henry III.” His work on the Australian television series “The Secret Life of Us” (2001–2002), where he played William McGill, marked his first significant television role and earned him an AFI Award nomination in 2001, which he later won in 2002 for Best Lead Actor in a Television Drama.

Edgerton’s international recognition began with his role as Owen Lars in “Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones” (2002) and “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” (2005), a role he reprised in the Disney+ series “Obi-Wan Kenobi” (2022). He has appeared in notable films such as “Ned Kelly” (2003), “King Arthur” (2004), and “Kinky Boots” (2005). Beyond acting, Edgerton expanded his career into screenwriting, producing, and directing. He co-wrote and produced the short film “Bloodlock” (1998) and later garnered critical acclaim for his multi-hyphenate work on “The Gift” (2015), where he wrote, directed, produced, and co-starred. This thriller earned him a nomination for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directing – First-Time Feature Film.

Throughout his career, Edgerton has accumulated numerous accolades, including an AACTA Award for Best Lead Actor in a Television Drama for “The Secret Life of Us” (2002) and an AACTA Award for Best Supporting Actor for “Animal Kingdom” (2010). His portrayal of Richard Loving in the 2016 historical drama “Loving” earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture. In 2018, he wrote, directed, and co-starred in the drama “Boy Erased,” and in 2019, he co-wrote and starred in “The King.” His diverse filmography includes roles in “Warrior” (2011), “Zero Dark Thirty” (2012), “The Great Gatsby” (2013), “Black Mass” (2015), “Bright” (2017), “The Green Knight” (2021), and “Thirteen Lives” (2022). He continues to be active in both acting and filmmaking, with upcoming projects like “Train Dreams” (2025) and “The Plague” (2025), and starring as Jason Dessen in the Apple TV+ series “Dark Matter” (2024).
