About

Born John Christopher Reilly on May 24, 1965, in Chicago, Illinois, John C. Reilly grew up as the fifth of six children. His father managed an industrial linen supply company. Reilly developed an interest in acting from a young age, participating in amateur theater from the age of eight. He pursued formal training at the Goodman School of Drama and later became a member of Chicago’s notable Steppenwolf Theatre. His career began primarily with dramatic roles, showcasing his ability to portray a range of complex characters.

Reilly’s film debut came in 1989 with a small role in the Vietnam War drama “Casualties of War,” a role that Brian De Palma expanded due to Reilly’s performance. Throughout the 1990s, he built a solid filmography with appearances in “Days of Thunder” (1990), “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993), and “The River Wild” (1994). He became a recurrent collaborator with director Paul Thomas Anderson, delivering notable performances in “Hard Eight” (1996) as a compulsive gambler, “Boogie Nights” (1997) as a narcissistic porn star, and “Magnolia” (1999) as a compassionate police officer. His stage work also earned him recognition, including a Tony nomination for his role in “True West” on Broadway.

A significant turning point in his career arrived in 2002 when he received critical acclaim and major award nominations. He garnered Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Amos Hart in the musical film “Chicago.” This period also saw him in “Gangs of New York” and “The Hours.” Subsequently, Reilly transitioned into broader comedic roles in films like “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” (2006) and “Step Brothers” (2008), while also exploring animated features, notably voicing the lead in “Wreck-It Ralph” (2012). His later work has spanned diverse genres, from the biopic “Stan & Ollie” (2018), where he played Oliver Hardy, to television series such as Showtime’s “Moonbase 8” and HBO’s “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.”
