John Salley, born on May 16, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York, is a retired American professional basketball player. He is unique in NBA history as the first player to win championships with three different franchises: the Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls, and Los Angeles Lakers. Furthermore, he is one of only two players to win a championship across three different decades. After a successful college career at Georgia Tech, where he led the Yellow Jackets to the 1985 ACC Championship and had his jersey number 22 retired, he was drafted 11th overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 1986 NBA draft. He quickly became an integral part of the Pistons’ “Bad Boys” era, contributing to their NBA championships in 1989 and 1990.
Following his time with the Pistons, Salley played for the Miami Heat and Toronto Raptors before joining the Chicago Bulls in 1996, where he secured his third NBA championship during their record-breaking 72-win season. He later had a brief stint with Panathinaikos B.C. in Greece in 1996. Salley concluded his NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2000, winning his fourth NBA championship alongside Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, solidifying his unique achievement of winning titles in three different decades. His basketball career spanned from 1986 to 2000, showcasing his adaptability and consistent performance across various teams and eras.
