About

John Amadeus Devenanzio, known as Johnny Bananas, was born on June 22, 1982, in Fullerton, California. He attended Pennsylvania State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. His television career began in 2006 with his appearance on the seventeenth season of MTV’s “The Real World: Key West.” This initial exposure served as a foundation for his subsequent long-standing participation in reality competition programming. Early in his career, Devenanzio quickly gained recognition for his competitive nature, which led to numerous appearances on “The Challenge” series.

Devenanzio’s career progressed significantly through his consistent involvement in “The Challenge,” where he distinguished himself as one of the most successful and recognized contestants. He has participated in twenty-one seasons of “The Challenge” and secured seven wins, accumulating over $1.1 million in prize money. Notable moments in his career include his strategic decision to keep all prize money from his partner, Sarah Rice, during “Rivals III” after she had previously voted him into elimination. Beyond his competitive endeavors, Devenanzio expanded his media presence by becoming the host of NBC’s “1st Look” in 2018, a role he maintained until 2023, showcasing his versatility in entertainment. He has also made appearances in scripted television series such as “Robot Chicken” and “American Dad!”, and feature films like “The Head Thieves” and “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.” Recently, in 2023, he launched a cannabis gummy line in partnership with King City Gardens, diversifying his portfolio into commercial ventures.

Throughout his career, Devenanzio has become known for his strategic gameplay and often controversial moves, which have contributed to his reputation as an “infamous” contestant. His consistent presence and competitive record have allowed him to maintain relevance in the reality television landscape for approximately two decades. His involvement with various spin-offs of “The Challenge,” such as “Champs vs. Pros” and “Champs vs. Stars,” also highlights his broad engagement within the genre. He has also utilized his platform for charitable causes, raising funds for organizations like the Special Olympics during his participation in “The Challenge: Champs vs. Pros” and “Champs vs. Stars.”
