Yuvraj Singh was born on December 12, 1981, in Chandigarh, India. Early in his life, he demonstrated athletic talent in tennis and roller skating, even winning the National Under-14 Roller Skating Championship. However, under his father’s guidance, he focused on cricket, attending DAV Public School and earning a commerce degree from DAV College, Panjab University. His cricket career began in junior leagues, notably with Punjab Under-16s in 1995 and Punjab Under-19s in 1996. A standout performance in the 1999 Cooch Behar Trophy, where he scored 358 runs, marked his emergence. In 2000, his all-round skills at the Under-19 Cricket World Cup, which India won, earned him the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award and a call-up to the national squad. He made his international debut in October 2000 against Kenya in the ICC KnockOut Trophy, where he later earned a Man of the Match award against Australia for scoring 84 runs off 80 balls. He was also part of the first intake of cricketers at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
Throughout his career, Singh was known for his left-handed middle-order batting and slow left-arm orthodox bowling. He was a member of the Indian ODI team from 2000 to 2017 and played his first Test match in October 2003. A significant milestone occurred at the 2007 World Twenty20 against England, where he famously hit six sixes in a single over off Stuart Broad, setting a record for the fastest fifty in Twenty20 Internationals, achieved in just 12 balls. His pivotal role in India’s victory at the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup earned him the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award, where he scored 362 runs and took 15 wickets, becoming the first all-rounder to achieve this feat in a single World Cup. After being diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his left lung in 2011, he underwent successful chemotherapy and made an international comeback in September 2012, demonstrating remarkable resilience.
Following his recovery, Singh received the Arjuna Award in 2012, India’s second-highest sporting honor, and the Padma Shri in 2014, India’s fourth-highest civilian honor. He also became a prominent figure in the Indian Premier League, initially captaining Punjab Kings and later playing for Pune Warriors India, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Mumbai Indians. He won the IPL title with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 and Mumbai Indians in 2019. In February 2014, FICCI awarded him the ‘Most Inspiring Sportsperson of the Year Award’. Yuvraj Singh officially announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket on June 10, 2019, reflecting on a career marked by significant achievements and personal triumphs.
