Jonathan Stuart Bailey was born on April 25, 1988, in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, England. He began his acting career at a young age, appearing in Royal Shakespeare Company productions when he was seven after auditioning through a local dance club in Henley-on-Thames. His professional stage debut was in the 1995 RSC production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ at the Barbican Theatre, and by the age of eight, he was performing as Gavroche in a West End production of ‘Les Misérables’. Bailey’s early career also included roles such as Prince Arthur in the RSC’s ‘King John’ in 2001 and his feature film debut in ‘Five Children and It’ in 2004.
Bailey gained wider recognition through his television roles, notably as Olly Stevens in the crime-drama ‘Broadchurch’ from 2013 to 2015, and later, for his portrayal of Lord Anthony Bridgerton in the Netflix series ‘Bridgerton’ starting in 2020. His performance in ‘Bridgerton’ earned him critical acclaim and global recognition, with the series, particularly its second season centered on his character, achieving significant viewership records. On stage, he has demonstrated versatility with leading roles in musicals and plays, earning a Laurence Olivier Award in 2019 for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical for his performance as Jamie in the gender-swapped revival of ‘Company’. In 2023, he received further critical attention for his role as Tim Laughlin in the miniseries ‘Fellow Travelers’, for which he won a Critics’ Choice Television Award and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.
Looking ahead, Bailey is set to appear as Fiyero in the musical fantasy film ‘Wicked’ (2024) and its sequel ‘Wicked: For Good’ (2025), and as Dr. Henry Loomis in the science fiction thriller ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ (2025). He has established himself as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, contributing to significant projects across various genres. In 2024, Bailey launched The Shameless Fund, a charity focused on supporting the LGBTQ+ community, and in 2025, he announced a temporary hiatus from acting in 2026 to dedicate more time to its initiatives.
