Jonathan Mark Pearce, born on December 23, 1959, in Plymouth, Devon, developed an early passion for football. His ambition to play professionally for Bristol City was curtailed at age 14 due to a leg injury. This turning point led him to pursue a career in broadcasting, which began part-time at BBC Radio Bristol. His initial match commentary covered a League Cup game between Bristol Rovers and Exeter City. By the age of 23, Pearce had become a sports editor. In 1987, he relocated to London, joining Capital Radio, where he launched ‘Capital Gold Sportstime’ on Capital Gold in 1988, significantly impacting radio football coverage.
Pearce’s career expanded into television commentary, including minor Premier League games for Sky Sports during the 1992–1993 season. He gained broader recognition for his role as the excitable commentator on the popular BBC Two and Channel 5 series, Robot Wars, from 1998 to 2004, a role he reprised for the show’s revival in 2016.
