Jordin Brianna Sparks was born on December 22, 1989, in Phoenix, Arizona, and raised in Glendale, Arizona, and Ridgewood, New Jersey. Her father, Phillippi Sparks, was a professional American football player. Jordin gained national recognition in 2007 when, at the age of 17, she won the sixth season of American Idol, becoming the youngest victor in the show’s history. Her self-titled debut studio album, released later that same year, achieved significant commercial success, selling over two million copies worldwide and earning certified platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). This album featured hit singles “Tattoo” and “No Air,” with the latter, a collaboration with Chris Brown, selling over three million digital copies in the United States and receiving a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. She is noted as the only American Idol contestant to have her first five singles reach the top 20 in the United States.
Her second studio album, “Battlefield” (2009), debuted at number 7 on the Billboard 200 chart. The title single also reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following these musical achievements, Sparks expanded her career into acting, making her stage debut in the Broadway musical “In The Heights” (2010), playing Nina Rosario. Her feature film debut was in “Sparkle” (2012), where she starred as the titular character. Throughout her career, Sparks has been recognized with multiple awards, including an NAACP Image Award, a BET Award, an American Music Award, a People’s Choice Award, and two Teen Choice Awards. Billboard magazine ranked her as the 91st Artist of the 2000s Decade, and VH1 placed her at number 92 on its list of the “100 Greatest Women in Music” in 2012.
After a five-year break from major music releases, she returned with the mixtape “#ByeFelicia” (2014) and her R&B-focused third studio album, “Right Here Right Now” (2015), which garnered positive critical reviews. In addition to her entertainment work, Sparks has developed a business presence by releasing several perfumes, including “Because of You…” (2010), “Fascinate” (2012), and “Ambition” (2012). She has continued to release music, with her fourth album “Cider & Hennessy” in 2020 and “No Restrictions” in 2024, alongside various acting roles in television and film, including “A Christmas Treasure” (2021) and voice roles in animated series like “Rugrats.”
