Josephine Skriver Karlsen was born on April 14, 1993, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her mother was an information technology analyst and her father was a marine biologist; she and her younger brother were conceived through in vitro fertilization. At the age of 15, on a trip to New York, Skriver was approached about modeling. She was signed by Unique Models, a Copenhagen-based international modeling agency, and subsequently received offers from other agencies. Skriver chose to complete her schooling before fully pursuing her modeling career, which she commenced in 2011.
Skriver’s debut fashion season was Fall/Winter 2011. During this period, she opened for Alberta Ferretti and closed for Prada. She also walked for numerous other designers, including Calvin Klein, Rag & Bone, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, DKNY, and Christian Dior. Over the course of her career, Skriver has appeared in advertising campaigns for various brands and has been featured on covers and in editorials for prominent magazines globally. Her sustained presence in high-profile assignments established her status as a supermodel within the industry.
Her career highlights include her extensive work with Victoria’s Secret, where she began as a lingerie model in 2013 and earned the title of Victoria’s Secret Angel in February 2016. This made her the first Danish Angel since Helena Christensen. Skriver was also confirmed as a model for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 2020, where she received the “Rookie of the Year” award and returned for the 2021 issue. Beyond her modeling work, she is an advocate for LGBT issues and rights, serving as a celebrity ambassador for the Family Equality Council and its Outspoken Generation Program, aiming to raise awareness about LGBTQ families.
