Nick Rimando

Born on June 17, 1979, in Montclair, California, Nicholas Paul Rimando, of Mexican and Filipino heritage, began his impressive soccer career at UCLA, where he contributed to the Bruins winning the College Cup in 1997. In 2000, he was drafted by the Miami Fusion in the third round of the MLS SuperDraft. He quickly became the team’s starting goalkeeper, leading them to win the 2001 MLS Supporters’ Shield. Following the Fusion’s contraction, Rimando was selected by D.C. United in the 2002 MLS Allocation Draft. During his time with D.C. United, he played a crucial role in their 2004 MLS Cup victory and contributed to their 2006 Supporters’ Shield.

In 2007, Rimando joined Real Salt Lake, where he established himself as one of the league’s top goalkeepers. He became the MLS Cup MVP in 2009 after leading Real Salt Lake to their first MLS Cup championship. His career with Real Salt Lake was marked by numerous records, including minutes, games played, career wins, clean sheets, saves, and penalty kick saves. Rimando’s consistent performance earned him six MLS All-Star selections (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2019).

Rimando also represented the United States Men’s National Team, earning 22 caps and contributing to the team’s 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup victory. He retired from professional soccer in 2019 at the age of 40, having solidified his legacy as one of Major League Soccer’s greatest goalkeepers. In 2025, Nick Rimando will be inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, recognizing his significant contributions to American soccer. Post-retirement, he has remained involved with Real Salt Lake as a coach and ambassador, continuing to influence new generations of players.
