About

Born on February 8, 1998, in Toyama Prefecture, Japan, to a Japanese mother and a Beninese father, Rui Hachimura initially pursued baseball before transitioning to basketball. He quickly demonstrated exceptional talent, leading Meisei High School to three consecutive All-Japan High School Tournament titles. His performance at the youth level also saw him become a top player for Japan’s under-17 and under-19 national teams in FIBA competitions, earning a bronze medal at the 2013 FIBA Asia U16 Championship. Hachimura’s early achievements garnered international attention, culminating in his commitment to play college basketball for the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the United States in 2015.

Hachimura joined Gonzaga in 2016, becoming the fifth Japanese-born player to compete in NCAA Division I basketball. Despite initial linguistic and cultural adjustments, he steadily improved, making history in 2017 as the first Japanese national to play in the NCAA Division I men’s tournament. His collegiate career was marked by significant milestones, including first-team All-WCC honors and being named the WCC Player of the Year in 2019. He led Gonzaga in scoring with 19.7 points per game and averaged 6.5 rebounds in his junior season, during which he also earned Consensus first-team All-American honors and the Julius Erving Award.

In 2019, Hachimura declared for the NBA draft, where he was selected ninth overall by the Washington Wizards, becoming the first Japanese player drafted in the first round. He made an immediate impact, earning a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2020. In 2023, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he continues to be a key contributor. With the Lakers, he played a vital role in their 2023 NBA In-Season Tournament championship. Hachimura has consistently represented Japan’s senior national team, participating in the 2019 FIBA World Cup and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he scored 34 points against Slovenia. His career highlights include consistent scoring and rebounding, demonstrating a steady progression as a professional athlete.
