Born Oscar Joshua Boone on November 21, 1984, in Mount Airy, Maryland, Josh Boone developed his basketball skills at South Carroll High School and later at West Nottingham Academy. He averaged 20 points, 14.4 rebounds, and seven blocked shots per game in high school, leading South Carroll to a 20-6 record. At West Nottingham, he further honed his abilities, averaging 28 points, 16 rebounds, and 9.7 blocks per game. His early career culminated in playing college basketball for UConn, where he was named to the Big East All-Rookie Team in his freshman year. He started 37 of 38 games, averaging 5.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks, contributing to UConn’s NCAA Championship win in 2004.
Boone continued to excel at UConn, earning Big East Defensive Player of the Year and All-Big East Second Team selections in his sophomore year. He started all 31 games at center, averaging 12.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks, recording 11 double-doubles. He set a career-high with 22 points and eight blocked shots against Quinnipiac in 2004, and later topped that with nine blocks against St. John’s in 2005. In his junior year, he received All-Big East Honorable Mention and averaged 10.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks over 32 starts in 34 games. After his successful college career, Boone declared for the 2006 NBA draft.
His professional career began when he was drafted 23rd overall by the New Jersey Nets in the 2006 NBA Draft. Boone played for the Nets for four years, making his NBA debut on December 2, 2006. In his rookie season, he averaged 4.2 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. His most productive NBA season was 2007-08, starting 53 of 70 games, averaging 8.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks. Following his NBA tenure, Boone embarked on an extensive international career, playing for 10 different teams across nine leagues in eight countries, including the Zhejiang Golden Bulls in China, Iowa Energy in the NBA D-League, San Miguel Beermen in the Philippines, Manama in Bahrain, and Melbourne United in Australia, where he won an NBL championship in 2018.
