Josh Reginald Hazlewood was born on January 8, 1991, in Tamworth, New South Wales, Australia. He was raised in Bendemeer, a small country town. From a young age, he engaged in cricket, playing for Tamworth against adult men by the age of 12. Hazlewood was selected to represent New South Wales at 17, becoming the youngest pace bowler for the state. His first-class debut occurred in November 2008 at the Sydney Cricket Ground against New Zealand. He continued his early career trajectory by becoming the youngest player to make his One Day International (ODI) debut for Australia on June 22, 2010. He also played for Australia Under-19s, being the youngest member of their squad for the 2008 Under-19 World Cup.
Hazlewood made his Test match debut against India on December 17, 2014, taking five wickets in the first innings. He was a member of the Australian squad that won the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. In November 2015, he achieved the Player of the Match award in the first-ever day-night Test match, where he took the initial wicket and recorded the first five-wicket haul in day-night Test cricket. He reached 50 career Test wickets in his 12th Test match, a faster rate than several distinguished Australian bowlers. His international career has seen him captain Australia in an ODI and serve as a Test vice-captain following the 2018 Australian ball-tampering scandal.
Throughout his career, Hazlewood has consistently ranked among the top bowlers globally. He captured his 200th Test wicket against India in 2020. In 2021, he attained the distinction of being ranked among the top 10 bowlers in all three formats (Test, ODI, T20) in ICC rankings. He played a key role in Australia’s triumph in the 2021 T20 World Cup and the 2023 Cricket World Cup. His domestic T20 career includes playing for the Sydney Sixers and multiple stints with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, where he was a top wicket-taker for Royal Challengers Bengaluru when they won their maiden IPL title in 2025.
