Mike Whitney played 94 first-class matches for New South Wales between 1980 and 1994, becoming one of only three fast bowlers to take over 300 first-class wickets for the state. His exceptional performance earned him the New South Wales Cricketer of the Year award in 198889, and he was a key member of four Sheffield Shield-winning teams. Whitney made an unexpected Test debut for Australia in 1981 and went on to play 12 Test matches and 38 One Day Internationals, notably taking 11 wickets against India in Perth in 1992, including 7 for 27 in the second innings, which secured him Man of the Match honors. He was also Australia’s leading wicket-taker and most economical bowler in the 1992 Cricket World Cup before retiring from first-class cricket in 1994.
He continues to perform with ‘Oz Icons’ alongside Wayne ‘Junior’ Pearce. In 2024, recognizing his immense contributions to the sport, Mike Whitney was formally inducted into the prestigious New South Wales Cricket Hall of Fame, further solidifying his legacy across sports, entertainment, and community advocacy.
