Julian Francis Edelman was born on May 22, 1986, in Redwood City, California. He demonstrated athletic talent early, playing varsity football and baseball at Woodside High School, where he excelled as a quarterback, leading his team to an undefeated season in 2004. He continued his football career at the College of San Mateo before transferring to Kent State University. At Kent State, Edelman was a three-year starting quarterback, setting a single-season total offense record in 2008 previously held by Joshua Cribbs. His collegiate performance included 4,997 passing yards, 30 passing touchdowns, 2,483 rushing yards, and 22 rushing touchdowns.
Edelman’s professional journey began when the New England Patriots drafted him in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft as the 232nd overall pick. Initially transitioning from quarterback to a return specialist and wide receiver, he steadily proved his value. While he faced early challenges, including an arm injury in 2009 and a foot injury in 2012 that prematurely ended his season, he consistently contributed with his versatility. He became a primary offensive starter in 2013, achieving his first 1,000-yard receiving season. Edelman was a key component of the Patriots’ dynastic run, winning three Super Bowls (XLIX, LI, LIII).
His postseason performances were particularly notable. He holds Super Bowl records for punt returns and first-half receptions in a single game. In Super Bowl XLIX (2015), he led all receivers with 109 yards, scoring the winning touchdown. In Super Bowl LI (2017), he made a critical catch that helped fuel a historic comeback victory. Edelman culminated his playing career by earning the Super Bowl LIII MVP award in 2019, securing 10 receptions for 141 yards in the Patriots’ victory. Following his retirement after the 2020 season, Edelman has moved into media, co-founding Nuthouse Sports, a production company, and hosting successful podcasts.
