Julius Peppers

Julius Frazier Peppers was born on January 18, 1980, in Wilson, North Carolina, and raised in Bailey. He attended Southern Nash High School where he excelled in football, basketball, and track. His high school football career saw him accumulate 3,501 rushing yards and 46 touchdowns as a running back and defensive lineman. He also earned four consecutive all-conference selections in basketball as a power forward and contributed to a state track championship.

Peppers continued his athletic career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, playing defensive end for the Tar Heels from 1998 to 2001. He led the nation with 15 quarterback sacks in 2000, earning first-team All-ACC and second-team All-American honors. His junior year in 2001 was highly decorated, as he was a unanimous first-team All-American, won the Chuck Bednarik Award, Lombardi Award, and Bill Willis Trophy for his defensive prowess. He also notably walked onto the men’s basketball team, contributing to the 1999–2000 team that reached the Final Four. He finished his college football career with 30.5 sacks, second all-time in UNC history, 167 tackles, and five interceptions. In 2024, Peppers was selected for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a testament to his exceptional 17-year NFL career.

Following his collegiate success, Peppers was selected second overall in the 2002 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. He immediately made an impact, earning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2002 despite playing only 12 games. His career included stints with the Chicago Bears (2010-2013) and Green Bay Packers (2014-2016) before returning to the Panthers (2017-2018) to finish his playing career. Throughout his time in the NFL, Peppers consistently demonstrated high-level performance, earning nine Pro Bowl selections and three First-Team All-Pro honors, establishing himself as one of the league’s most formidable pass rushers. Post-retirement, in 2019, he joined the Carolina Panthers as a Special Assistant of Business Operations.
