Chris Sale

Christopher Allen Sale was born on March 30, 1989, in Lakeland, Florida. His early athletic career included playing both basketball and baseball at Lakeland Senior High School. After high school, he was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 21st round of the 2007 MLB Draft but chose instead to attend Florida Gulf Coast University. During his collegiate baseball career with the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, Sale excelled, posting an 11–0 win-loss record and a 2.01 ERA in 2010, leading the NCAA in strikeouts. He was recognized as the Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year and the Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year, indicating his rapid rise as a top amateur talent. His distinctive low three-quarter sidearm throwing motion was adopted during his time in collegiate summer leagues. He was later drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the first round (13th overall) of the 2010 MLB Draft.

Sale made his MLB debut with the Chicago White Sox on August 6, 2010, becoming the first 2010 draft pick to reach the majors. He initially pitched as a reliever, securing four saves in his rookie year and eight saves in 2011. Transitioning to a starting pitcher role in 2012, Sale quickly became one of the league’s premier aces, selected for his first of seven consecutive All-Star appearances from 2012 to 2018. Over his career with the White Sox (2010-2016), he established himself as a dominant force, consistently ranking among the league leaders in strikeouts and WHIP. His tenure with the White Sox included setting a franchise record for strikeouts in a season in 2015 with 274. In 2016, he started the All-Star Game for the American League, solidifying his status as an elite pitcher.

In December 2016, Sale was traded to the Boston Red Sox, where he continued his high-level performance. He was a key contributor to the Red Sox’s 2018 World Series championship, closing out the final game. With the Red Sox, Sale broke the record for fewest innings pitched to reach 1,500 and 2,000 career strikeouts, demonstrating his exceptional strikeout ability. Following several injury-plagued seasons, Sale was traded to the Atlanta Braves in December 2023. In his inaugural season with the Braves in 2024, he achieved a career first by winning the National League Cy Young Award, the Triple Crown, and a Gold Glove Award, alongside his eighth All-Star selection. In 2025, he continued to make history by becoming the fastest pitcher to reach 2,500 career strikeouts, further cementing his legacy in Major League Baseball.
