Rising star Kane Wommack is the head coach of the University of South Alabama. He previously worked at Indiana University Bloomington from 2018 to 2020 as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He was also a player at Arkansas and Soutthern Miss. Wommack helped the Arkansas Razorbacks win the SEC West Division in 2006. He joined Southern Miss as a transfer, and he helped the Golden Eagles win three straight bowl games.
Prior to the 2016 season, Wommack joined the South Alabama coaching staff as the linebackers coach and defensive coordinator. South Alabama vastly improved their rushing defence (-69.2) and scoring defence (-10.8) during Wommack’s two seasons in Mobile, Alabama. He oversaw one of the best turnarounds in the nation. The group was in the top 10 nationally for passing defence and had the fifth-largest improvement nationally in scoring defence (-10.3). The Sun Belt Conference’s top five teams in pass defence, pass efficiency defence, tackles for loss, and third-down conversion percentage were the Jaguars. His starting linebackers both garnered postseason recognition, and USA was one of just two programmes to have multiple members of the first team all-conference.
In 2018, Tom Allen hired Wommack to be Indiana’s linebackers coach as the tenth assistant coach. On December 27, 2018, Allen revealed that Wommack would take over as defensive coordinator and resigned from his position. Wommack was appointed the third head coach at the University of South Alabama on December 12, 2020.
