About

Kane Wommack was born on April 19, 1987, in Springfield, Missouri. He began his collegiate playing career at Arkansas in 2005 as a fullback, where he contributed to the Razorbacks winning the SEC West title in his second year. He later transferred to Southern Mississippi, aiding the Golden Eagles in securing three consecutive bowl appearances before graduating in 2009 with a degree in political science. Wommack commenced his coaching career in 2010 as a quarterbacks coach at UT Martin, followed by graduate assistant roles at Jacksonville State in 2011, where he coached the defensive line, and Ole Miss from 2012-2013 under his father, Dave Wommack, who was the defensive coordinator. At Ole Miss, he also worked with Tom Allen, which would later lead to further collaboration. His early career focused on developing defensive strategies and coaching various positions, laying the groundwork for his future leadership roles.

Wommack’s career progressed quickly, becoming defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Eastern Illinois in 2014. Under his leadership, the Panthers’ defense achieved national rankings in interceptions (second), takeaways (third), and red zone defense (eighth) in 2015. This success led to a defensive coordinator and linebackers coach position at South Alabama (2016-2017), where his unit significantly improved, ranking among the top 10 nationally in passing defense. In 2018, he rejoined Tom Allen at Indiana as the linebackers coach and was promoted to defensive coordinator for the 2019-2020 seasons, becoming one of the youngest Power 5 defensive coordinators. His “Swarm Defense” at Indiana led the Big Ten in interceptions and red zone defense in 2020, contributing to the Hoosiers’ national recognition.

In 2020, Wommack was appointed head coach at the University of South Alabama, where he achieved a 22-16 record over three seasons. He led the Jaguars to their first bowl game victory in school history and two overall bowl appearances (2022-2023). Under his guidance, South Alabama recorded its first two winning seasons in FBS history, tying the school record with 10 wins in 2022 and winning the Sun Belt Conference Western Division that year. In 2024, Wommack was hired by the University of Alabama as defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach, reuniting with Kalen DeBoer, with whom he previously collaborated at Indiana. This move highlights his continued career progression and trust within the highest levels of collegiate football coaching.
