Two-time Olympic gold medalist Tom Dean MBE is a competitive freestyle swimmer from Britain. At the Summer Olympics in 2020, he won gold in both the individual 200-meter freestyle event as well as the team event, the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay. At both the European Junior Championships and the European Championships, he competed for Great Britain. He also participated in the 2020 European Championships, where he took home three team gold, two team silver, and one individual bronze in the 200-meter freestyle.
At the European Championships in May 2021, Dean participated on teams that won gold in the mixed 4×100 metre and mixed 4×200 metre freestyle events, as well as silver in the men’s 4×100 metre and 4×200 metre freestyle relays. Additionally, he took home a bronze medal in the 200-meter freestyle.
Dean and teammate Duncan Scott each won a gold medal at the 200-meter freestyle event on July 27, 2021, during the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Together with James Guy, Duncan Scott, and Matt Richards, he went on to win gold in the men’s 4 x 200 metre freestyle relay in a time of 6 min 58 sec. Dean became the first male British swimmer to win two gold Olympic medals at the same games in 113 years. James Guy and Adam Peaty later accomplished the same feat later the same week. For his contributions to swimming, Dean was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2022 New Year’s Honours.
