Karen Pickering

Karen Denise Pickering, born on December 19, 1971, in Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, embarked on her competitive swimming career at a young age. She made her senior international debut in 1986 at just 14 years old, quickly establishing herself in the freestyle discipline. Pickering trained at Crown Pools in Ipswich, representing Team Ipswich from 1997 until her retirement in 2005. Her dedication and talent led to an extensive career filled with numerous accolades, making her a prominent figure in British swimming for two decades. She earned an MBE in the 1994 New Year Honours List for her contributions to the sport.

Pickering achieved historical milestones, becoming Britain’s first female individual World Champion swimmer in 1993, securing gold in the 200m freestyle at the FINA Short Course World Championships. Her success extended to team events, where she was part of relay teams that won gold three times in World Championships, both long course (2001) and short course (1999, 2000). She also competed in four consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1992, showcasing her enduring presence at the highest level of international competition.

Throughout her career, Karen Pickering amassed an impressive collection of 8 World Championship medals (including 4 gold), 14 European Championship medals, and 38 National Championship titles. Representing England, she earned 13 Commonwealth Games medals, with four of them being gold, including individual titles in the 100m freestyle (1994) and 200m freestyle (2002). Her performance at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, where she won two gold and one silver medal in front of a home crowd, was a highlight, culminating in her carrying the English flag at the closing ceremony. After retiring, Pickering remained active in swimming, serving as a commentator for the BBC and becoming the head of swimming at a West Sussex school. In October 2025, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Suffolk, a recognition she deeply appreciated given her history with Ipswich and the support she received there during her career.
