Karim Rashid was born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1960 to an English mother and an Egyptian father who was an abstract artist. At the age of five, Rashid’s family emigrated to Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. He attended Woodlands Secondary School and later received a Bachelor of Industrial Design in 1982 from Carleton University in Ottawa. After graduation, he pursued advanced design studies in Naples, Italy, under the guidance of Ettore Sottsass, and then spent a year working at the Rodolfo Bonetto Studio in Milan.
Rashid began his professional career in 1984, working for seven years with KAN Industrial Designers in Canada, where he contributed to projects ranging from x-ray equipment to everyday objects like mailboxes and snow shovels. During this period, from 1985 to 1991, he also co-founded and designed the Babel Fashion Collection and North. In 1993, Rashid established his own design studio in New York City, marking a significant turning point in his career. His work is featured in numerous prestigious museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, Centre Pompidou, and SFMOMA, with over 20 permanent collections showcasing his designs.
Throughout his career, Rashid has become recognized for his distinctive design philosophy, often referred to as “sensual minimalism.” He is known for incorporating vibrant color palettes, particularly pink, which he believes evokes a sense of well-being and positive energy. His extensive portfolio includes designs for well-known brands such as Umbra, with iconic products like the “Garbo” waste can and “Oh Chair.” He has also designed perfume bottles for Kenzo, bobble water bottles, watches and tableware for Alessi, and lighting for Artemide and Martinelli Luce. His collaborations extend to global brands including Veuve Clicquot, Audi, Samsung, Swarovski, and Armani, demonstrating his wide-reaching influence in industrial design.
