Grimes gained early recognition playing Fred MacMurray’s daughter in “Pardon My Past” (1945) and Bing Crosby’s character’s daughter in “Blue Skies” (1946). Her most memorable role came at age six as Zuzu Bailey in Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946), where she delivered the iconic line, “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings.” Her childhood acting career included 16 films, such as “The Bishop’s Wife” (1947), where she played Debby Brougham, and “Rio Grande” (1950) with John Wayne.

She pursued education at the University of Central Missouri and became a medical technologist, working in this field for 25 years. Despite personal hardships, including the loss of her youngest son and second husband, Karolyn Grimes later embraced her connection to “It’s a Wonderful Life.” The film’s resurgence in popularity during the 1980s led her to become an active ambassador, sharing its message of hope and personal resilience.
Grimes continues to be involved with events celebrating “It’s a Wonderful Life,” including an annual festival in Seneca Falls, New York, which is believed to be the inspiration for the fictional town of Bedford Falls. Her role as Zuzu Bailey has resonated with many, and she frequently makes appearances at screenings and fan gatherings, often with other cast members from the film. She authored “Zuzu Bailey’s It’s a Wonderful Life Cookbook,” combining recipes with behind-the-scenes stories and photos from the movie.
