About

Nathan Christopher Fillion was born on March 27, 1971, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, to English teachers Cookie and Bob Fillion. He attended Holy Trinity Catholic High School, Concordia University College of Alberta, and the University of Alberta before relocating to New York City in 1994. Prior to his move, he gained experience in improv theatre with groups like Rapid Fire Theatre and the improvised soap opera Die-Nasty, also appearing in TV movies such as ‘Ordeal in the Arctic’ (1993) and ‘Strange and Rich’ (1994).

Fillion’s career gained early momentum with a regular role as Joey Buchanan on the daytime soap opera ‘One Life to Live’, earning him a Daytime Emmy Award nomination in 1996. After leaving the series in 1997, he secured smaller roles in films like ‘Saving Private Ryan’ (1998) and ‘Blast from the Past’ (1999). A significant breakthrough occurred in 1998 when he joined the cast of ‘Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place’ as Johnny Donnelly, featuring in 60 episodes. His portrayal of Captain Malcolm Reynolds in Joss Whedon’s critically acclaimed but short-lived science fiction series ‘Firefly’ (2002) garnered him a dedicated fanbase. He reprised this role in the 2005 film continuation, ‘Serenity’. Fillion further collaborated with Whedon, playing the villain Caleb in the final season of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ (2003).

Fillion’s career expanded into major film roles in diverse genres, including the horror-comedy ‘Slither’ (2006) and the indie hit ‘Waitress’ (2007). In television, he starred in the short-lived series ‘Drive’ (2007) and had a recurring role as Dr. Adam Mayfair on ‘Desperate Housewives’ (2007-2008). A notable turn was his role as Captain Hammer in the musical internet series ‘Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog’ (2008). In 2009, he began his long-running role as Richard Castle in ABC’s ‘Castle’, a mystery series for which he won four People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Dramatic TV Actor. More recently, since 2018, he has starred as John Nolan in ‘The Rookie’, also serving as an executive producer for the show and its spin-off ‘The Rookie: Feds’. His extensive work as a voice actor includes roles in video games such as ‘Halo 3’ (2007) and ‘Destiny’ (2014), and animated projects like ‘Wonder Woman’ (2009) and ‘Monsters University’ (2013). He has continued his association with director James Gunn, appearing in films like ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021) and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ (2023), and is slated to portray Guy Gardner/Green Lantern in the upcoming ‘Superman’ (2025) film.
