Kate Walsh was born in San Jose, California, on October 13, 1967. She spent parts of her formative years in San Jose and Tucson, Arizona. Her early professional development involved regional theater and institutions such as the Piven Theatre Workshop and the Chicago Shakespeare Repertory. Walsh also participated in National Public Radio productions, including the radio play “Born Guilty.” Transitioning to New York City, she joined the comedy troupe “Burn Manhattan” and performed in various Off-Broadway plays.
Her television career began with appearances in supporting roles. She gained early recognition on “The Drew Carey Show” (1995) as Niki Fifer, a character dealing with weight-related issues. She also portrayed Carol Nelson in HBO’s “The Mind of the Married Man” (2001) and acted opposite Norm MacDonald in his sitcom “Norm” (1999). A significant turning point in her career was her role as Dr. Addison Montgomery in “Grey’s Anatomy” (2005-2023). This character’s popularity led to a spin-off series, “Private Practice” (2007-2013), where Walsh took on the lead role. She further expanded her filmography with roles in movies such as “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” (2012) and “Legion” (2010), and more recently, as Madeline in “Emily in Paris” (2020-2022) and The Handler in “The Umbrella Academy” (2019-2024).
Beyond her acting work, Walsh has engaged in production roles, notably as an executive producer for “Bad Judge” (2014-2015) and “The Runt” (2024).
