About

Kathryn Lee Epstein was born on August 16, 1953, in Paris, France, to American parents. Her father, Aaron Epstein, was a musician and US Navy Chief Petty Officer, and her mother, Joan Cuttell, was a singer. She grew up in Bowie, Maryland, and developed an early interest in music, singing in a folk group during high school. Gifford attended Oral Roberts University, where she studied drama and music. Her early career included a supporting role in the soap opera “Days of Our Lives” in 1976 and work as a singer on the syndicated game show “Name That Tune” from 1977 to 1978. She continued to build her career in entertainment, appearing in “Hee Haw Honeys” in 1978 and serving as a correspondent for “Good Morning America” in the early 1980s.

Gifford gained widespread recognition beginning in 1985 when she became the co-host of “The Morning Show” on WABC-TV, alongside Regis Philbin. The show expanded nationally in 1988 as “Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee,” becoming a prominent daytime television program. During her 15-year tenure on the show, she garnered 11 Emmy nominations. In 2008, Gifford joined NBC’s “Today” show as co-host of its fourth hour, “Today with Kathie Lee and Hoda,” alongside Hoda Kotb. This pairing became known for its informal style and contributed to increased viewership for the segment. She concluded her role on “Today” in April 2019 to focus on film projects.

Beyond her television presence, Gifford has authored several New York Times bestselling books, including her autobiographies “I Can’t Believe I Said That” and “Just When I Thought I’d Dropped My Last Egg.” She has also written children’s books and works on Christian faith. As a singer, she has released multiple albums and written several musicals, including Broadway’s “SCANDALOUS,” which earned a Tony nomination in 2012. Her work as a producer includes projects such as “Then Came You” (2020) and a series of “Godwink Christmas” movies. Gifford has received an honorary degree from Marymount University for her humanitarian efforts, particularly her support for children’s organizations like Childhelp and the Association to Benefit Children, which established Cassidy’s Place and Cody House for children affected by HIV and crack cocaine addiction.
