Kei Nishikori was born on December 29, 1989, in Matsue, Shimane, Japan. His father, Kiyoshi, is an engineer, and his mother, Eri, is a piano teacher. He began playing tennis at the age of five and won the All Japan Tennis Championships for Kids in 2001. At 14, Nishikori moved to Bradenton, Florida, to join the IMG Academy in 2004, marking a pivotal step in his development. He turned professional in 2007, quickly making his mark by reaching his first ATP quarterfinal at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships, becoming the youngest player to do so since Boris Becker in 1985. Nishikori achieved his first ATP title in 2008 at the Delray Beach tournament, a significant victory that made him the first Japanese man in nearly 16 years to win an ATP event. Later that year, he made his US Open debut, reaching the round of 16, a feat not achieved by a Japanese player in 71 years. Nishikori reached his career-high ranking of world No. 4 in March 2015, becoming the only Japanese man in the Open Era to be ranked in the top five in singles.
Throughout his career, Nishikori has accumulated 12 ATP Tour titles. A major highlight includes his runner-up finish at the 2014 US Open, making him the only man representing an Asian country to contest a major singles final. He also achieved a bronze medal in singles at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, ending Japan’s 96-year wait for an Olympic tennis medal. In 2024, he continued his return to form, reaching his first Masters quarterfinal in five years at the National Bank Open and another quarterfinal at his home tournament, the Japan Open Tennis Championships. His dedication earned him his first ATP Tour final in six years at the 2025 Hong Kong Open, and he achieved a significant milestone in February 2025, recording his 300th hardcourt career win. In April 2025, he recorded his 450th career win, making him the first Asian player to achieve this feat.
