About

Kenan Thompson was born on May 10, 1978, in Columbus, Ohio, to Fletcher and Elizabeth Ann Thompson. His family relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, when he was nine months old. Thompson’s mother enrolled him in acting classes at age five, where he began his performing arts journey. His early roles included playing Toto in a church production of ‘The Wiz’ and the titular character in a kindergarten play of ‘The Gingerbread Man’. Thompson developed an early interest in television comedy, watching shows like ‘The Facts of Life’, ‘The Cosby Show’, and ‘Family Ties’, which influenced his acting style. He attended Tri-Cities High School, a magnet school for visual and performing arts, where he continued to cultivate his talents.

Thompson’s professional career commenced in the early 1990s as an entertainment reporter for CNN’s ‘Real News for Kids’. His breakthrough came with Nickelodeon, where he joined the cast of ‘All That’ in 1994 at age 16, playing characters such as Principal Pimpell and Pierre Escargot. Concurrently, he starred as Kenan Rockmore in ‘Kenan & Kel’ from 1996 to 2000. These roles established him as a prominent figure in children’s television. He also ventured into film, appearing in ‘D2: The Mighty Ducks’ (1994) and ‘D3: The Mighty Ducks’ (1996), and starred in ‘Good Burger’ (1997), based on an ‘All That’ sketch. Other film credits from this period include ‘Heavyweights’ (1995), ‘Big Fat Liar’ (2002), and ‘Love Don’t Cost a Thing’ (2003).

In 2003, Thompson joined the cast of ‘Saturday Night Live’, becoming the first regular cast member born after the show’s 1975 premiere. He achieved repertory player status in 2005 and has since become the longest-tenured cast member in ‘SNL’ history, breaking the previous record of 14 years held by Darrell Hammond. His work on ‘SNL’ has earned him five Primetime Emmy nominations, including a win in 2018 for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for the song ‘Come Back Barack’. Thompson has also maintained a presence in film and television outside of ‘SNL’, with roles in ‘Fat Albert’ (2004), ‘Snakes on a Plane’ (2006), and voice acting in ‘The Smurfs’ (2011), ‘The Grinch’ (2018), and the ‘Trolls’ film series. He also starred in and executive produced the NBC sitcom ‘Kenan’ from 2021 to 2022 and hosted the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2022. In 2022, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
