Kerry Washington was born on January 31, 1977, in The Bronx, New York City. Her early life included performing with the TADA! Youth Theater teen group and attending the Spence School in Manhattan, graduating in 1994. She furthered her education at George Washington University, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1998 with dual degrees in anthropology and sociology. Her acting training continued at Michael Howard Studios in New York City. Washington’s professional career began with a Screen Actors Guild card obtained for a commercial, leading to her screen debut in the 1994 ABC telefilm ‘Magical Make-Over’. She also participated in the PBS sketch comedy series ‘Standard Deviants’ in 1996.
Her career gained momentum with various film roles, including ‘Our Song’ (2000), ‘Save the Last Dance’ (2001), and ‘The Human Stain’ (2003). A turning point arrived with her role as Chris Rock’s love interest in the spy thriller ‘Bad Company’ (2002), which provided her with enough income to qualify for health insurance under SAG. In 2004, Washington received strong reviews for her lead role in Spike Lee’s ‘She Hate Me’ and portrayed Della Bea Robinson in the acclaimed biopic ‘Ray’ (2004). She continued to expand her filmography with roles such as Alicia Masters in ‘Fantastic Four’ (2005) and a wife of Idi Amin in ‘The Last King of Scotland’ (2006).
