Kevin Michael Costner was born on January 18, 1955, in Lynwood, California. His father’s work as an electric line servicer required the family to move frequently, leading Costner to often be the new student in school. Despite this, he participated in sports like basketball, football, and baseball during his teenage years. He attended California State University, Fullerton, graduating in 1978 with a business degree. During this period, Costner began taking acting lessons. A chance encounter with actor Richard Burton on a flight inspired Costner to fully pursue an acting career, leading him to move to Hollywood and take on various jobs, such as driving a truck and giving bus tours, while awaiting his acting break.
Costner’s career began to gain momentum in the mid-1980s. After an uncredited role in “The Big Chill” (1983), his breakout arrived with “Silverado” (1985). He achieved significant stardom with roles in “The Untouchables” and “No Way Out” (both 1987). His directorial debut, “Dances With Wolves” (1990), proved a major milestone, earning him two Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. This success was followed by a series of acclaimed and commercially successful films, including “JFK” (1991), “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” (1991), and “The Bodyguard” (1992). He has continued to work consistently, starring in the television series “Yellowstone” (2018–2024), for which he received a Golden Globe award for his portrayal of John Dutton.
Beyond acting and directing, Costner has pursued other ventures. He is the singer in the country rock band Kevin Costner & Modern West, which he founded with his former wife, Christine Baumgartner. The band released albums such as “Untold Truths” (2008) and “Tales from Yellowstone.” Costner has also demonstrated an interest in baseball, with several of his films featuring the sport, and he was a partial owner of the Lake County Fielders independent baseball team. Additionally, he has engaged in business ventures, including a company developing oil separation machines, and has contributed to philanthropic efforts, serving on an honorary board for the National World War I Museum.
