Kim Appleby achieved national and international recognition as half of the pop duo Mel & Kim, establishing an unbroken run of top ten successes in the UK. The duo signed with Supreme Records and collaborated with acclaimed producers Stock Aitken Waterman, captivating audiences across Europe with their distinctive sound and style. Their debut single, ‘Showing Out (Get Fresh at the Weekend),’ reached number three on the UK Singles Chart and topped the US Dance Chart in 1986. This was swiftly followed by ‘Respectable,’ which soared to number one on both the UK Singles Chart and the US Dance Chart in 1987.

Appleby further expanded her influence within the music industry, moving into songwriting for other artists and releasing further singles including ‘Mama’ and ‘If You Cared.’ Her expertise and deep understanding of contemporary music were recognized when she took on a significant role chairing the Ivor Novello Awards judges panel for Best Contemporary Song, a prestigious position she held for over ten years. This long-standing commitment highlighted her respected standing among peers and her ongoing contribution to identifying and celebrating musical excellence.
