Kyle Ahrens was born on March 6, 1996, in Versailles, Ohio. He played high school basketball at Versailles High School, where he was a four-year starter. As a senior, he averaged 30.0 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, earning Associated Press Division III First Team All-Ohio honors. His performance in high school led him to commit to Michigan State, where he joined the men’s basketball program as a guard/forward.
Ahrens’ collegiate career at Michigan State spanned from the 2015-16 to the 2019-20 season. During his freshman year (2015-16), he appeared in 26 games, averaging 1.2 points and 0.6 rebounds in 3.3 minutes per game. His role expanded in the 2016-17 season, playing in 34 games with four starts, averaging 2.6 points and 1.1 rebounds. The 2017-18 season was marked by injury, as he missed the entire period due to a preseason injury.
He returned for the 2018-19 season, appearing in 30 games and starting eight. In this season, he averaged 4.7 points and 2.5 rebounds per game, playing 18.8 minutes per game. A career highlight occurred on November 27, 2018, when he scored a career-high 15 points against Louisville. Ahrens’ final season, 2019-20, saw him play in 27 games, averaging 3.6 points and 1.8 rebounds in 13.1 minutes. He was recognized academically throughout his career, including being selected to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court for maintaining a GPA of 3.2 or higher, and receiving Academic All-Big Ten selections.
