Zachary Thomas LaVine was born on March 10, 1995, in Renton, Washington. His early interest in basketball was sparked by watching NBA icons like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, inspiring him to practice extensively, particularly dunking. He attended Bothell High School, where he excelled as a point guard, averaging 28.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game in his senior year. His high school performance earned him recognition as the 2013 Associated Press Washington state player of the year and Washington Mr. Basketball, as well as a First-team Parade All-American selection. He was a four-star recruit, ranking as the No. 12 shooting guard nationally.
LaVine played college basketball for the UCLA Bruins during the 2013–2014 season. Despite a late-season shooting slump, he was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. He subsequently declared for the 2014 NBA draft, where he was selected 13th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves. With the Timberwolves, he won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 2015 and became one of only four players to win it consecutively, successfully defending his title in 2016. He was also named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2015. In 2017, LaVine was traded to the Chicago Bulls, where he continued to develop his scoring prowess. He achieved his first NBA All-Star selections in 2021 and 2022, and represented the United States, earning a gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. In 2025, after eight seasons with the Bulls, LaVine was traded to the Sacramento Kings, marking a new chapter in his professional career.
