Born on February 25, 1991, in Ithaca, New York, Kyle Dake began wrestling at the age of four, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, a high school wrestling coach, and his father, an NCAA All-American. He attended Lansing High School in Lansing, New York, where he became a two-time NYSPHSAA Division II state champion and a three-time NHSCA national champion, finishing his high school career with a record of 224-14. His early athletic experiences also included baseball, football, and soccer, activities that contributed to his overall physical development before he focused primarily on wrestling.
Dake continued his wrestling career collegiately at Cornell University. Between 2010 and 2013, Dake achieved a unique milestone, becoming only the third wrestler in history to win four NCAA Division I National Championships. Notably, he is the only wrestler to achieve this feat in four different weight classes (141 lb, 149 lb, 157 lb, and 165 lb) and without taking a redshirt season. This period saw him amass a collegiate record of 137-4, concluding with an impressive 77-match winning streak and two undefeated seasons. His exceptional performance earned him the Dan Hodge Trophy and the Schalles Award in his senior year, along with three EIWA titles.
Transitioning to senior-level freestyle wrestling, Dake competed in the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games, securing bronze medals in the 74 kg category at both events. He also became a four-time World Champion, winning back-to-back titles twice: at 79 kg in 2018 and 2019, and at 74 kg in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, he earned a silver medal at the World Championships. Dake has consistently represented the United States, winning gold medals at the Pan American Championships in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, further solidifying his status as a prominent figure in the sport. He is married to Megan Dake and has two daughters, EllaJo and Emilia, and one son, Leo.
