United Kingdom Lady Camden, known as Rex Wheeler, has transformed from a classical ballet dancer into a celebrated drag queen, captivating audiences with her artistic prowess and charismatic stage presence.
Lady Camden thanked The Hotel Castro for hosting her cast and crew in San Francisco during the 'The Peach Pit Cabaret' show.
Rex Wheeler, born on August 9, 1990, in Camden Town, London, England, developed a foundation in performing arts from a young age, attending the Acland Burghley School and the Royal Ballet School. His early career saw him as a professional ballet dancer, first with the Slovak National Ballet and then with the Sacramento Ballet from 2010 to 2015. He later joined Smuin Ballet in San Francisco, where he danced and choreographed from 2015 to 2018, even premiering his choreographed piece, ‘Take Five,’ in 2019. This extensive background in classical dance provided a unique artistic toolkit that would later distinguish his drag persona.
The creation of Lady Camden marked a significant turning point in Wheeler’s career. Named after his hometown, Lady Camden emerged from his desire for a more liberating form of self-expression beyond traditional ballet. This transition led him to the national stage in 2022, where he competed on Season 14 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. During his time on the show, Lady Camden showcased her versatility and talent, winning three episodes and ultimately finishing as the runner-up. Her performances earned her a cash prize of $50,000 and enhanced her public profile within the drag community.
Since her appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Lady Camden’s career has continued to evolve. A documentary titled “Lady Like” by filmmaker Luke Willis chronicles her journey from ballet to drag, highlighting her personal experiences, including growing up in London and the profound impact of her brother’s passing. This film, which closed the BFI Flare London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival, provides an intimate look into the artist behind the persona. Lady Camden has also served as a special guest on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK (Series 5) in 2023 and has been featured in various web series, such as “Whatcha Packin'” and “Give It to Me Straight.” She notably won Best Fight at the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards, shared with Bosco, and was part of the Best Ensemble Cast in an Unscripted Series, recognized at the Critics’ Choice Real TV Awards for her contributions to RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 14.
