Roy R. Haylock, born on June 27, 1975, in New Orleans, Louisiana, is recognized professionally by his stage name, Bianca Del Rio. He is of Cuban descent on his mother’s side and Honduran descent on his father’s side, and is the fourth of five children. His early career involved costume design and acting in plays at West Jefferson High School. After a brief period in New York City, he returned to Louisiana and solidified his reputation as a costume designer. In 1993, at 17, he won a Big Easy Entertainment Award for Best Costume Design for *Snow Queen*. He went on to receive 13 nominations for the same award, winning six times, and also designed costumes for the New Orleans Opera.
Haylock began performing as a drag artist in 1996 in the play *Pageant* in New Orleans. His talent was recognized by local drag queen Lisa Beaumann, who cast him in shows at the nightclub Oz. As Bianca Del Rio, he earned the New Orleans Gay Entertainer of the Year title for three consecutive years. In 2001, he served as co-grand marshal for Southern Decadence XXIX. Following Hurricane Katrina, Haylock relocated to New York City. There, he continued his work as a costumer for Broadway shows, ballet, and opera, collaborating with companies like Barbara Matera, Ltd. Concurrently, he performed in drag as Bianca Del Rio, appearing in cabaret alongside Lady Bunny at venues such as XL Nightclub and featuring in web series like *Queens of Drag: NYC* (2010).
His career significantly advanced after competing on the sixth season of *RuPaul’s Drag Race* in 2014, where he emerged as the winner. This victory marked him as the second contestant to reach the finale without lip-syncing for his life, and the first to navigate the entire competition without ever placing low or in the bottom. He is also the first Hispanic winner of the series. Post-*Drag Race*, Del Rio has toured extensively with stand-up shows, including *The Rolodex of Hate* (2014), *Not Today Satan* (2015-2016), *Blame It On Bianca Del Rio* (2017-2018), and *It’s Jester Joke* (2019), which notably made him the first drag queen to headline Wembley Arena. He has also starred in the independent films *Hurricane Bianca* (2016) and its sequel, *Hurricane Bianca: From Russia With Hate* (2018), and appeared in the West End musical *Everybody’s Talking About Jamie*.
