Hip hop royalty Shanell Jones, better known by the stage name Lady Luck, is an American rapper from Englewood, New Jersey. Jones, whose great aunt is Sylvia Robinson, the creator of Sugarhill Records, is a triple RIAA gold and platinum certified artist. She got her start in the industry while still in high school, freestyling on New York’s Hot 97 morning show, which led to her earning a multi-million dollar record deal with Def Jam at the age of 16. She left the label after three years to pursue a solo career. Jones was profiled in The New Yorker and a series of pieces in The Source, which chronicled her career in monthly sections. Backstage, a 2000 documentary film on Jay-Z’s 1999 tour, also featured her.
Jones is recognised for her humorous freestyles and explosive punchlines, which have earned her the admiration of many of today’s best performers. She has dabbled in every aspect of the creative process in music, from performer to writer to producer, as a result of her desire to try new things and push herself beyond her comfort zone.
Jones teamed up with her friend Somaya Reece to form “La Rosa Ent” and “The Greatest Entertainment,” a joint record label and television/film production company that houses independent artists, while also releasing her own album “She God” under the label’s umbrella. Jones appeared in the the Bravo cable network’s First Family of Hip Hop, which premiered in January 2017. The show revolves around the late Sylvia Robinson’s family.
