LaMichael Keondrae James was born on October 22, 1989, in New Boston, Texas. He attended Liberty-Eylau High School in Texarkana, Texas, where he excelled in football, playing as a running back. During his junior year, he recorded 229 carries for 1,600 yards and 16 touchdowns, alongside 33 receptions for 500 yards and three touchdowns. His senior campaign saw him gain 2,043 yards and 24 touchdowns on 230 touches, averaging 8.9 yards per carry. Rivals.com recognized James as a four-star recruit and ranked him as the No. 12 all-purpose back in the nation in 2008.
James continued his football career at the University of Oregon, playing for the Oregon Ducks from 2009 to 2011. In 2009, he was named Pac-10 Offensive Freshman of the Year. The 2010 season marked a significant professional achievement, with James rushing for 1,731 yards, leading the nation. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist, finishing third, and received the Doak Walker Award. In 2011, he became Oregon’s career rushing leader, achieving 1,805 yards, and set an Oregon single game record with 288 rushing yards against Arizona. His college career concluded with 5,082 total rushing yards, placing him second in Pac-12 Conference history. James was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2012 to 2013 and later for the Miami Dolphins from 2014 to 2015.
