Daniel Lawrence Whitney, widely recognized as Larry the Cable Guy, was born on February 17, 1963, in Pawnee City, Nebraska. His early life was spent on an 80-acre farm, and his father served as a Christian minister. When he was 16, his family relocated to West Palm Beach, Florida, where he attended The King’s Academy and later Berean Christian School, graduating in 1982. He pursued higher education at Baptist University of America in Georgia and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, majoring in drama and speech. During this period, interactions with roommates from Texas and Georgia influenced his development of a Southern accent, which later became a key element of his comedic character. He ultimately left college after his junior year to pursue a career in comedy.
Whitney began his career in the early 1990s, making regular radio appearances on syndicated programs like “The Ron and Ron Show” and “The Bob & Tom Show,” initially performing stand-up under his real name. He gained significant recognition after creating the “Cable Guy” character, characterized by a stereotypical redneck appearance, a thick Southern accent, and the catchphrase “Git-R-Done!” This persona became central to his comedic act, helping him achieve widespread fame. His career milestones include releasing seven comedy albums, with “Lord, I Apologize” (2001) and “The Right to Bare Arms” (2005) achieving gold and platinum certifications from the RIAA, respectively. He also became a key member of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour alongside comedians Bill Engvall, Ron White, and Jeff Foxworthy.
His acting career includes starring in films such as “Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector” (2006) and “Witless Protection” (2008). He is most notably recognized as the voice of Mater in Disney/Pixar’s “Cars” franchise, a role he reprised in “Cars 2” (2011) and “Cars 3” (2017), as well as numerous related shorts and video games. In television, he hosted “Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy” (2011–2013) on the History Channel, a travelogue series that garnered millions of viewers. His alma mater, Pawnee City, Nebraska, has even named a street in his honor, and he made a significant $5 million donation to the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Florida, in 2010 after their son received treatment there.
