Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on September 22, 1984, Laura Vandervoort began her acting career at 13. She gained early experience with background work on Canadian commercials and TV shows. Her early career also included roles in Disney Halloween movies and children’s TV series, such as “Goosebumps” and “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”. While attending York University, where she studied Psychology and English, Vandervoort secured a lead role as Sadie Harrison in the CTV teen drama series “Instant Star,” which ran for four seasons from 2004 to 2008. This period established her as a consistent performer in the Canadian entertainment industry.
Her career expanded significantly with her role as Kara Zor-El, Supergirl, in The CW’s “Smallville,” appearing as a regular in season seven (2007-2008) and returning for guest spots in seasons eight and ten (2011). Following this, Vandervoort took on a main role as Lisa in ABC’s science fiction series “V” from 2009 to 2011. She continued to work in feature films, including “The Lookout” (2007) alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Jeff Daniels, “The Entitled” (2011) with Ray Liotta, and “Ted” (2012) directed by Seth MacFarlane. A significant turning point came with her leading role in the sci-fi action series “Bitten” for Syfy and Space network, which ran for three seasons (2014-2016) and garnered critical acclaim and a substantial fan base.
In recent years, Vandervoort has diversified her career by moving into producing and directing. In 2019, she executive produced and starred in “Age Of Dysphoria” and made her directorial debut with the short film “My Soul to Take” (2021), which she also wrote. During the 2020 pandemic, she filmed five feature films and guest-starred in “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2021). Her recent projects include the lead role in the thriller “Black Bags” (2023) and joining the cast of the CTV/CW series “Sullivan’s Crossing” (2023). She has also published her first children’s book, “Super-Duper Deelia,” available worldwide on Amazon, and continues to develop films through her production company, Lava Works Entertainment Inc.
