Born on January 3, 2000, in Maltby, Great Britain, Liam Kirk developed an early passion for ice hockey, inspired by his family’s involvement in the sport, particularly his brother Jonathan. His foundational years were spent with the Sheffield Junior Academy, where he consistently demonstrated exceptional skill. Kirk’s remarkable talent was evident through his repeated selection for the Midlands Conference teams across various age groups (U11, U13, U15, U17), where he secured two EIHA Conference Tournament wins and earned six tournament all-star selections, alongside three MVP awards. During the 2015–16 season, playing in the England U18 North League, Kirk achieved a league-leading 98 points, comprising 60 goals and 38 assists, contributing to his team’s U18 league title win.
Kirk’s professional career began to accelerate in 2016 when he signed a three-year apprentice contract with the Sheffield Steelers. His early success led to a pivotal moment in 2018 when he was drafted 189th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in the NHL Entry Draft, making him the first English-born and trained player to be selected by an NHL team. Following this, he joined the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) through the CHL Import Draft. After loan spells in Europe with Hanhals IF (2020–21) and the Sheffield Steeldogs (2020–21), Kirk signed an entry-level NHL contract with the Arizona Coyotes in 2021. He began the 2021–22 season with the Tucson Roadrunners in the AHL, contributing two goals and one assist in eight games before his season was cut short by a knee injury. His tenure with the Coyotes organization concluded with a return to Europe.
In 2023, Kirk joined HC Litvínov in the Czech Extraliga, where he transitioned to play as a center and quickly became a key offensive player, leading the team in goals and points during the playoffs and breaking the record for most playoff goals by a Litvínov player. In May 2024, Eisbären Berlin of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) announced his signing on a two-year contract. Kirk has also been a consistent presence on the British national team, representing Great Britain at junior and senior levels. He played a significant role in Great Britain’s promotion to the Elite Division at the 2018 IIHF World Championship Division I and notably finished as a joint-top goalscorer at the 2021 IIHF World Championship with seven goals in seven matches.
