Lindsay Whalen, born on May 9, 1982, in Hutchinson, Minnesota, carved out a highly successful career in basketball. She attended Hutchinson High School, where she excelled, earning a state title with her club team and multiple All-Conference selections in basketball, tennis, and track. Her collegiate career at the University of Minnesota marked a significant turning point, bringing national prominence to the women’s basketball program. Whalen led the Golden Gophers to their first-ever NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004, setting numerous school records including becoming the all-time leading scorer with 2,285 points. Her jersey, #13, was honored and raised to the rafters of Williams Arena in January 2005, recognizing her profound impact on the program.
Whalen was drafted 4th overall in the 2004 WNBA Draft by the Connecticut Sun. She led the Sun to consecutive WNBA Finals appearances in 2004 and 2005. In 2010, she was traded to her home state team, the Minnesota Lynx, where she would achieve significant success. With the Lynx, Whalen secured four WNBA championships in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017, becoming the winningest player in WNBA history with 325 regular season wins. Her professional accolades also include five WNBA All-Star selections, three All-WNBA First Team honors, and three times leading the league in assists. She was recognized as one of the league’s top players on the WNBA Top20@20 in 2016 and The W25 in 2021. Internationally, Whalen contributed to two Olympic gold medals with the U.S. National team in 2012 and 2016, and two World Championship gold medals in 2010 and 2014.
Following her illustrious playing career, Whalen transitioned into coaching. In April 2018, while still playing for the Lynx, she was appointed as the head women’s basketball coach at her alma mater, the University of Minnesota, a role she held for five seasons. During her tenure, she led the Gophers to a 71–76 overall record and a WNIT Second Round appearance in her first season (2018-19). In November 2024, Whalen returned to the professional ranks, joining the Minnesota Lynx as an assistant coach, bringing her extensive experience and leadership back to the WNBA.
