Lloyd Barker completed his legal training with Walkers, culminating in his admission to the Cayman Islands Bar on June 26, 2020. This admission was part of the first cohort heard in the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands following social distancing protocols implemented due to the Covid-19 pandemic. His academic journey began early, graduating as class valedictorian from Wesleyan Christian Academy in 2011. He then pursued a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree with High Distinction in Law from Carleton University in Canada, specializing in Business Law with a minor in Communication Studies.
In 2016, Lloyd was a recipient of the Walkers Legal Scholarship. He continued his legal education, undertaking the Graduate Diploma in Law at the University of Law, Manchester, in 2017, where he was awarded a Commendation. By 2018, he had completed the joint LPC/LLM in Professional Legal Practice course with Distinction, also at the University of Law. Concurrently with his academic pursuits, in 2012, Lloyd founded the Pursuit of Excellence – the Lloyd Barker Foundation, an organization dedicated to empowering young people through academic, social, and developmental initiatives. He was articled to Shelley White, a partner in Walkers’ Insolvency & Dispute Resolution and Trust Disputes groups.
Lloyd officially joined the Maples Group in 2025 as an associate in their Finance team in the Cayman Islands office. In this role, he advises on structured finance, including collateralized loan obligations, fund finance transactions, asset finance, and general corporate matters. His work primarily supports clients involved in global financial markets, with a specific focus on cross-border transactions, leveraging several years of experience advising asset managers, financial institutions, and private equity sponsors. Before joining the Maples Group, he worked at another international law firm in the Cayman Islands, focusing on a wide range of finance and corporate transactions.
