Lori Petty was born on October 14, 1963, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the eldest of three children to a Pentecostal minister. She spent her childhood traveling across the United States. Before pursuing acting, Petty worked as a graphic artist in Omaha, Nebraska, after graduating from North High School in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1981. An impulsive decision led her to New York City to take acting classes, and later to Los Angeles where she began her career. Her early television appearances in the 1980s included a notable role in the mini-movie “Bates Motel” (1987) and a recurring character on “Booker” (1989-1990).

Petty’s breakthrough in film began in the early 1990s with roles in “Cadillac Man” (1990) and as Tyler in “Point Break” (1991). Her career advanced significantly with her portrayal of Kit Keller, a feisty baseball player, in the critically and commercially successful film “A League of Their Own” (1992).
